FAIRFIELD, CT - On Monday, November 20, 2023, around 1:25 P.M., the Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center began taking multiple calls reporting a building fire in the 700 block of Kings Highway East. The initial assignment consisted of Engine 4, Engine 3, Engine 5, Engine 1, Rescue 1, and Car 33.
Fairfield Engine 2, Ladder 2, and Car 3 were occupied at the time providing station coverage and manpower at the scene of a two-alarm fire in Bridgeport. Fairfield units in Bridgeport freed up as quickly as they could and responded back to Fairfield. Engine 4, en route to Station 2, arrived seconds after the dispatch and confirmed a working structure fire. Car 33, under the command of Assistant Chief Roger Caisse, arrived soon after and assumed command.
Companies encountered heavy fire in the garage and attic space of a one-and-a-half-story auto body shop. Conditions rapidly deteriorated and fire began venting through the roof. Bridgeport Engine 4, Ladder 6, and Battalion 1 were requested to the scene of the fire from station coverage. Battalion 1, under the command of Assistant Chief Andy Ellis, requested Bridgeport Training 2 to also respond to the scene as a safety officer.
Companies were pushed out by rapidly deteriorating fire conditions and the decision was made to go defensive. Fairfield Ladder 2 and Bridgeport Ladder 6 set up their tower ladders and flowed water into the roof. Soon enough, part of the roof collapsed in on the structure. Companies were able to bring the fire under control in approximately one-and-a-half hours. Companies remained on scene for extensive overhaul for several hours after. There were no injuries. The Fairfield Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of this fire.
