Passerby Calls In 3rd Avenue House Fire In Troy

On November 9, 2024, at 9:56 PM, the Rensselaer County Emergency Communication Center transmitted the alarm of fire for 517 3rd Avenue. The caller reported they drove by and seen the 2nd or 3rd floor on fire. Engine one, truck one, engine four, engine two, medic four, truck two, the rescue squad, and the battalion chief responded to the scene, as they were doing so the dispatcher notified them that they are taking a first party call from the resident inside of the house and are advising them to evacuate the building.


Engine one and truck one being only around the corner arrived on scene and had a three-story brick apartment building with nothing showing from the exterior. Firefighters made their way inside of the structure and notified the dispatcher that they had a working structure fire and transmitted the signal thirty. Firefighters connected to the nearby hydrant and charge the hydrant for engine one so they could have an adequate water supply. Firefighters on truck one made their way to the roof and began to check the roof area. Firefighters inside of the structure made their way to the third floor began to check the attic area for any type of extension. Another group of firefighters made their way down to the basement and check the basement and notified command that they had nothing in the basement or the first floor. Firefighters notified command that the fire was contained in between the floors between the second and third floor and had no extension outside of that.


Firefighters utilized a hand line and knocked down the fire and began to pull apart the ceilings to make sure that there was no further fire spread. Within 15 minutes firefighters had the entire incident under control. Command placed the incident under control and firefighters continue to overhaul the second-floor area for an extended period of time. Due to the rapid response of station one with both the engine and truck company in service at the time of the call, firefighters were able to handle this fire efficiently and quickly. Fire investigators arrived on scene and began to conduct their investigation into what caused the fire. No injuries were reported, and firefighters went back into service later that evening.
