KIRKWOOD, NY - At 11:42 A.M. on the morning of January 23rd, the Five Mile Point Fire Co. was dispatched to the address of 1128 Route 11 for a house fire. With multiple calls and reports from responding personnel of fire and smoke showing, the 2nd alarm was quickly requested.
Upon arrival of the first Engine 7 minutes after dispatch, crews encountered a single wide trailer with an addition off the side with heavy fire and smoke conditions. Initially it was unknown if the resident was home at the time of the fire, and an aggressive attack was initiated. Two hose lines were stretched to extinguish the fire. As additional crews arrived, an attempt was made to utilize the hydrant across the street from the driveway. Finding that hydrant frozen due to recent extreme cold temperatures, crews were forced to switch gears and utilized tankers. Additional tankers were requested at this time. With quick assistance from the Town of Kirkwood Water Department, the hydrant was thawed and was able to be utilized. This caused Route 11 to have to be closed for a short time while 5-inch hose ran across the road. As soon as the main body of fire was extinguished, crews broke down the 5-inch line and reopened Route 11.
Pretty quickly into the fire, the resident was located and safe. Crews remained on scene for several hours extinguishing the fire, searching the building, and performing overhaul operations. All crews were clear of the scene at 2:30 P.M. The house is being considered a total loss due to the extent of damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the members of the Broome County Fire Investigation Team. The resident is being assisted by the Red Cross.
