FORT MYERS, FL - The City of Fort Myers Fire Department is ending 2024 on a high note as they welcomed its newest addition —a new tiller truck that has already shown its value within the first few days of service. This long-awaited vehicle, the result of a 17-month project, is designed to enhance the department’s ability to navigate the busy streets of downtown Fort Myers and respond more efficiently to emergencies.
The unique design of the vehicle allows the rear wheels to be steered independently from the front, providing a level of maneuverability that traditional fire trucks simply can't match. This is especially helpful in areas with narrow roads, heavy traffic, and potential obstacles.
Within just an hour of being put into service, the new tiller truck responded to its first motor vehicle accident. Its quick response and its ability to easily access the scene highlighted how beneficial this apparatus is. Just three days later, the truck was on scene for its first fire, demonstrating its versatility and how seamlessly it has integrated into the department’s operations.
While the vehicle’s design is impressive, the training required to operate it was no less extensive. FMFD engineers underwent months of hands-on training to ensure they could navigate the complex steering system and handle the rig’s specific operational needs.
"This project has been a long time coming, and it’s been incredible to see the impact it’s already having on our operations," said Chief Tracy McMillion of the Fort Myers Fire Department. "The new tiller truck gives us an edge when it comes to navigating some of our City’s streets, and it's already proven itself to be an essential tool for our department."
The 17-month process of planning, designing, and building the new tiller truck—the only one of its kind in any fire department in southwest Florida—has been a team effort. With the truck now in service, it will support the department’s mission for years to come.
