On Saturday 12/7/24 at approximately 1120hrs., the Cornwall-on-Hudson Fire Department was dispatched to a reported smoke investigation in the area of Storm King Mountain. While assembling at the station, members were notified by a passerby, that the source of the smoke may in fact be from a building fire on Stable Way.

Upon arrival of Cornwall-on-Hudson Fire Chief Quinn, he found a three story, 4,000 sqft single family residence, located at 10 Stable Way, with heavy fire and smoke emanating from the residence. Chief Quinn immediately transmitted a 2nd Alarm bringing additional resources to the scene and requesting a Tanker Taskforce as this residence is located within the non-hydrant section of the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Upon arrival Squad 411 and Tower Ladder 413, crews initiated an aggressive interior attack of the fire and performed a primary search of the residence. Searches proved to be negative with Command later learning that the occupant had left the residence earlier in the day. As the first due crews were performing the initial attack, mutual aid partners from surrounding departments began to arrive on scene and assist with establishing a sufficient water supply as well as stretching secondary backup attack lines. Due to the remote location of the residence, this incident reached a third alarm equivalent bringing an additional Engine and Truck Company to the scene to provide relief for initial crews. The bulk of the fire was knocked down within about 30 minutes of arrival with crews continuing to open up void spaces to extinguish pockets of fire. The fire was deemed under control about 1 hour after the arrival of initial crews.

Five minor injuries were sustained by firefighters on scene with four being treated at the scene. The fifth firefighter was transported and subsequently released following treatment at Montefiore-St. Lukes-Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

The cause of the fire is unknown at the time of this press release and the incident remains under investigation by the Orange County Fire Investigations Unit and the Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department as per standard operating guidelines.
