YAPHANK, NY - The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) hosted a Youth Day on Saturday, August 31st at the Suffolk County Fire Academy, drawing approximately 80 junior firefighters and over a dozen advisors from 17 volunteer fire departments across Long Island.
Participants engaged in hands-on training evolutions that included Railroad Emergencies, Ladders, Forcible Entry, and SCBA Maze. The event is part of a statewide series of Youth Days organized by FASNY’s Youth in the Fire Service Committee.
“Our youth are our future and we are always happy to give our junior firefighters the chance to participate in high-quality, high-energy training opportunities,” said FASNY President Eugene Perry, who is also a member of the Patchogue Fire Department. He expressed gratitude to Suffolk Fire Academy Chiefs Scott Davonski and Daniel Sicilian, as well as the academy instructors, for their support in facilitating the event. Perry also thanked the advisors and parents who helped bring the youth together for a weekend of training.
Suffolk County Fire Rescue Acting Commissioner Rudy Sunderman was on hand to observe the activities, engaging with both students and advisors throughout the day. Edward Romaine, Suffolk County Executive, also made an appearance, checking in on the training sessions and interacting with the youth. “They truly are the future of the fire service,” Romaine remarked, underscoring the importance of investing in the next generation of firefighters.
The successful event highlighted FASNY's commitment to fostering the skills and leadership of young individuals in the fire service, ensuring a strong future for the industry.
