Mastic Beach FD Puts Out the Trash

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Mastic Beach, N.Y. – On the afternoon of August 27, 2024, at about 1:15 PM the Suffolk County Dispatch Center received calls for a vehicle fire on Cranberry Dr. off Elm Rd. West. The Suffolk County Police Department dispatched officers from the 7th precinct and Suffolk Fire Rescue dispatched the Mastic Beach FD to the scene of the incident.  The first due unit was tanker 5-13-2 under the command of Lieutenant William Anderson {5-13-60}. On arrival they found a garbage truck had dumped most of its load in the road and was smoldering and there was a fire in the back of the truck.

Under the direction of 1st Lt. Anderson, a line was quickly stretched, and firefighters went to work putting water on the pile of trash as well as in the rear of the truck. They were soon joined by members on Engine 5-13-9. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the bulk of the fire and used poles to move around the debris and put additional water on the pile in the street to ensure that all fire was out.  While firefighters operated the Fire Police squad blocked off the road with the help of Suffolk Police. Once firefighters were dismissed by the incident commander the scene was turned over to Suffolk Police who waited on scene for crews from the Town of Brookhaven and a fire marshal to arrive. No injuries were reported.
