Tornado Damage and Tanker Overturn Keep Hewlett Fire Department Crews Busy

Hewlatt, NY - The Hewlett Fire Department handled multiple emergency calls and two mutual-aid assignments over a busy two-day period, assisting neighboring departments with incidents ranging from an overturned gasoline tanker to a tornado-related structure collapse.

On Wednesday, August 19, at approximately 12:20 p.m., Ambulance 309 was dispatched to the Meadowmere Park Fire Department for an overturned gasoline tanker. The crew remained on scene for approximately four and a half hours before returning to service.

The department was called again on Thursday, August 20, at approximately 7:10 p.m., when a mutual-aid truck company was requested in Atlantic Beach to assist the Inwood Fire Department following a tornado-related structure collapse at the Sun & Surf Beach Club.

Ladder 303 responded to the scene and, upon arrival, deployed a precautionary attack line while crews conducted searches of the affected area. Firefighters completed the searches, with no additional victims located. One minor injury was reported in connection with the incident.

The back-to-back calls highlighted the importance of mutual aid and coordinated emergency response, as Hewlett firefighters joined neighboring departments in handling serious incidents across the area.
