Technical Rope Rescue Safely Removes Patient from Steep Riverbank

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Emergency crews carried out a technical rope rescue along the Susquehanna River on the South Side of Binghamton, New York, on August 14, 2026. The Binghamton Fire Department was the primary responding fire agency after receiving a report of a person stranded on a steep riverbank. Firefighters arrived to find a woman approximately 30 feet below street level on a near-vertical embankment and unable to safely climb back to the roadway. Binghamton firefighters worked alongside Binghamton Police to establish a technical rope rescue system. Crews used a lowering and hauling system with a change of direction to reach the woman before securing her in a Stokes basket. Rescuers then conducted a controlled haul, bringing the patient approximately 30 feet back up the embankment to street level. She was subsequently transported for medical evaluation.
