On July 28, at around 4 p.m., the Cedar Grove Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Overlook Road.

When firefighters arrived, they saw fire and smoke on the top story of the house. To find and put out hidden fire and stop it from spreading, crews used hose lines, launched an inside assault, and opened walls and ceilings. During the tragedy, township coverage and on-site assistance were provided by mutual help departments.

The department responded to four emergency calls that day, including the structural fire.
