Firefighter killed at Missouri truck fire and stand-off
MAPLEWOOD, MO - A St. Louis firefighter was shot to death and two other emergency workers were injured Monday.
5:40 a.m. on July 21, 2008 Maplewood fire department responded to a pickup truck fire when someone shot and killed one firefighter, 22-year-old Ryan Hummert, as he got off the engine.
A police officer also was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, and is being treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
A second police officer is also being treated for injuries.
Numerous police officers nearby communities surrounded the structure , rifles pointed at the home as smoke poured from it.
Sanyoz Rai, who works at a 7-Eleven store nearby, said he heard three or four shots at around 5:45 a.m., then saw a police officer go to the ground holding his shoulder. Rai said he then saw a firefighter on the ground behind the truck. He said the body remained there for an hour before authorities could get close enough to remove it.
Officers went door to doors in the neighborhood, telling people to evacuate immediately.
