At 10:17 p.m. on July 4, the Avenel Fire Department responded to a working home fire on Commercial Avenue.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered a two-story house with a large fire at the back that was spreading into the attic. When a first alarm was raised, nearby departments offered assistance to one another. After a partial roof collapse, crews began an aggressive fire fight before switching to external operations. Firefighters returned to the house to put out any last hot spots after the situation had improved.

No injuries were recorded, and all searches turned up nothing. The Avenel Fire Prevention Bureau is still looking into what caused the fire.
