Catskill Firefighters Locate Natural Gas Leak on Bartow Street

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Members of the Catskill Fire Company, Inc. responded to a reported natural gas odor in the vicinity of Bartow and Sunset streets on May 24.

According to officials, firemen looked into the complaint and found a shallow depression in the road where the leak originated. While workers proceeded to secure the scene, a section of Bartow Street was immediately blocked to traffic as a precaution.

In order to make sure natural gas had not moved through the ground and into basements, firefighters also inspected neighboring residences. Gas can occasionally lose its noticeable odor as it moves through the earth, according to officials, posing a risk to locals who might not be aware of its presence.

The response involved cooperation between the Catskill Police Department, Greene County 911, and Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation. No injuries were reported.
