Plane Crashes Off Cape May Point

Cape May Point, NJ - A single engine plane that took off from Trenton-Robinsville Airport a little after 8:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 26th, crashed off the coast of Cape May Point. Witnesses say the plane was flying erratically off the coast as far north as Wildwood.

Black smoke was seen trailing the plane as it flew extremely close to the ocean, one time touching it before crashing into the water a few yards from the Cape May Lighthouse around 11:30 A.M.

Units from all over Cape May County as well as the New Jersey State Police Marine unit and United States Coast Guard used sonar equipment to assist in the recovery of the plane, which was submerged in about 18-feet of water. The NJSP and Coast Guard also deployed aviation units to assist with the recovery operations. The plane was still submerged in the water as of Friday afternoon, May 28th.

Units operating at the scene included Cape May Fire and Police Departments, Cape May Beach Patrol, Cape May Point Fire Department, Erma Fire Department, Lower Township Rescue, Middle Township Dive Team, Villas Fire Department, West Cape May Fire Department and Wildwood Fire EMS.

The New Jersey State Police Dive Team and United States Coast Guard, as well as Sea Tow of Cape May assisted with the recovery. The crash is under investigation.
