Norwich Basement Fire Contained

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

On Wednesday, April 2nd at 10:26 am the East Great Plain Fire Department with Norwich’s Engine 3, Truck 1 and Battalion 1 were dispatched to 742 West Thames Street for smoke coming from the roofline. Battalion 1 arrived at 10:30 with smoke showing from the eaves and gable vent on a 1.5 story wood frame single family residence.

Engine 3 arrived next and stretched a 1.75” hose line through the rear door and into the basement. Engine 52 laid in from a hydrant by Scranton Chevrolet and established the water supply for Engine 3. Truck 1 positioned in the front and two of their members searched while the driver flew the bucket to the roof. Squad A stretched an 1.75” hose line through the front door and checked the attic for extension.

Crews found a fire in the basement that had broken a water pipe which essentially acted like a sprinkler system and kept the fire in check. Companies worked together checking for extension and performing ventilation. ET-51 set up on the hydrant and pumped it.

The working fire assignment brought two engines from Yantic and the Mohegan Tribal FAST. Ladder 5 is out of service so Taftville’s Tower 25 was started. Norwich Police shut down Route 32 and Norwich Public Utilities also assisted on scene. The Norwich Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
