Contractor Strikes Gas Main in East Lyme

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

At 7:33 am on Friday, 3/28/25 the East Lyme Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to 339 Flanders Road for a contractor who struck a gas main. Car 2 immediately signed on requesting Eversource Gas and Rescue 57 from Cohanzie. Engine 22 arrived at 7:36 and said they were stretching an 1.75” hose line. Engine 12 assisted with the water supply for 22 and getting another line going.

Station B said Oswegatchie Engine 42 was started as well and that the police were shutting the road down by Ace True Value. Car 2 established command and asked for Waterford Police to shut down Boston Post Road diverting traffic onto the highway.

Command requested police to assist with evacuations of The Shack, Liberty Bank and Flanders Doughnuts. Dispatch advised that Oswegatchie could not staff Engine 42 so Truck 15 was started from Jordan. At 7:43, command requested a response from the Connecticut Eastern Regional Response Integrated Team. An Old Lyme Engine was then started to Flanders for coverage.

East Lyme and Waterford crews set up two blitz fires but were told by Eversource to hold off on flowing water. Chesterfield Engine 31 was directed to Latimer Brook Commons where they had their own hydrant and established the staging area. The command post was on the north side of the incident by Macks Package Store. Rescue 27 then set up by the Walgreens Main Entrance.

A Level 1 CERRIT activation brought firefighters from the Sub Base, New London, Electric Boat, Norwich, Mohegan Tribal, Mashantucket Pequot and UConn Fire Departments.

Old Lyme could not muster a crew so an Old Saybrook Engine was started. They were told to set up near the daycare. The Electric Boat Fire Chief was assigned hazmat operations. Command reported Eversource secured the leak at 8:14. Flanders Four Corners to Frontage Road was shut down for an extended period of time while crews metered the surrounding structures.
