UNION CITY, NJ - Around 5:00 P.M. on March 17th, three women were trapped in a Hudson-Bergen Light Rail elevator, after it malfunctioned some 75-feet below ground, at the Bergenline Avenue subway station, near 49th Street, authorities stated.
After an elevator technician was unable to make necessary repairs, a rescue-assignment from the North Hudson Regional F.D., a large turn-out of NJ Transit Emergency Service Unit police officers and Union City EMS units teamed up for the rescue operation.
First responders were able to lower the elevator to the platform below, where a “rescue train,” designated for the victims and first responders, transported the victims to the Port Imperial Ferry station in Weehawken. There, the passengers were assisted by Union City and Weehawken EMTs.
All three elevators at the station were placed out-of-service until repairs could be made, according to a spokesperson. The rail service was bypassing the Bergenline Avenue station and providing substitute bus service.
