PARAMUS, NJ - Paramus firefighters battled an early-morning house fire that destroyed the home and one vehicle on March 17th.
As heavy rain continued to fall into St. Patrick's Day, a family was awakened by the smell of smoke and discovered a fire in their garage. A call to 911 was made, and just after 2am, the Paramus fire department was dispatched to 359 Harrison St. for a reported house fire.
The first arriving Chief was met with heavy smoke and fire coming from the garage that had already extended to the second-floor and a vehicle in the driveway. A 2nd alarm was transmitted as Engine 2 arrived on scene, secured a water supply, and stretched (two) 1.75" hand lines to the large two-story home.
All five family members were able to evacuate prior to FD arrival, and firefighters entered the home for an interior attack. Heavy fire in the garage and vehicle were quickly knocked down, however fire extended to the second-floor and attic. Crews made their way to the second-floor to attack the fire, but heavy flames began to vent through the roof. Command ordered the home to be evacuated, and Maywood Truck 17 put their aerial pipe into service.
Multiple exterior hand lines also helped knock down the fire. Even battling heavy rain, the fire was able to be brought under control in one hour. One minor injury to a firefighter was reported. Mutual aid from Oradell, Maywood and Rochelle Park assisted Paramus on scene. The cause remains under investigation.
