NEW WINDSOR, NY - On Sunday, February 13th at 7:02 P.M., the New Windsor Police Department along with New Windsor Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to 17 Shaw Road for a report of a residential structure fire. The Washingtonville Fire Department was also dispatched by OC911.
Upon arrival of emergency personnel, they located the residence which was already fully engulfed by flames and smoke. Firefighting operations were started and firefighters made an interior entry to search the inside as well as fight the fire. During their interior search, they located one person that was deceased.
The fire was eventually extinguished, leaving severe damage to the structure. Multiple area fire departments responded to the scene to assist due to there not being fire hydrants in the rural area.
The male that was found deceased inside the structure was identified as 60-year-old Roger A. Smith of New Windsor. The investigation into how the fire started is still under investigation by the New Windsor Police Department Detective Division, the New Windsor Fire Inspector’s Office, Orange County Fire Investigators and the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The additional fire departments that were at the scene were: Vails Gate, Coldenham, South Blooming Grove, Salisbury Mills, Chester, Maybrook and Montgomery.
