Probationary Firefighters Attend First Hands-On Training at Suffolk County Fire Academy
YAPHANK, N.Y. — On Saturday, September 21, probationary firefighters from across Suffolk County participated in their first hands-on training session as part of the Firefighter 1 (FF1) program at the Suffolk County Fire Academy (SCFA).
This pivotal session, known as the "HOT" (Hands-On Training) session, focused on fundamental firefighting skills, including hose handling and ladder operations. Over the course of several hours, these new recruits practiced deploying and maneuvering hoses—essential in fire suppression—while also learning the proper techniques for raising, climbing, and positioning ladders, which are crucial for both accessing burning structures and rescuing victims.
This training is critical for new firefighters, as it lays the groundwork for safe and efficient fireground operations. Hose handling teaches recruits how to control water flow and extinguish fires, while ladder skills are essential for gaining access to high or hard-to-reach areas during emergencies. Mastery of these basics is key for new firefighters to perform their duties effectively and ensure the safety of themselves, their teams, and the communities they serve.
The hands-on experience at SCFA ensures that these probationary firefighters are well-prepared for the challenges they'll face in real-world fire emergencies, whether they occur in residential homes, commercial buildings, or more complex scenarios.
