Avenel Fire Department Mourns Loss of Ex-Chief Steve Terebetsky

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

The Avenel Fire Department is in grief for the passing of former Chief and Life Member Steve Terebetsky, whose many years of service had a profound effect on both the department and the community.

Terebetsky joined the agency in 1976 and devoted almost 50 years to the fire service, according to officials. He worked his way up to become Chief of the Department in 1986, and in 1996 and 1997 he was the President of the Fire Company. He has supported generations of firemen as President of the Avenel Fire Company Relief Association since 1998.

Throughout his tenure, Terebetsky taught numerous firemen about apparatus driving, pump operations, and firefighting techniques. He was regarded by department members as a mentor, educator, and leader. The lessons he imparted and the firefighters he assisted in developing are examples of his ongoing effect.

His wife, Marge, son Anthony, daughter-in-law Lauren, and grandchildren Ryan and Abigail received condolences from officials.
