On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Thomasville Volunteer Fire Department personnel were responding to a residential fire. Firefighter William “Bill” Nix was riding in the front seat of an engine, when it ran off the right side of the roadway and overcorrected before traveling off the left side of the roadway, striking a ditch and overturning. Firefighter Nix was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was transported to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.
