Eight departments work Sun City two alarm fire

SUN CITY, AZ - Firefighters raced to the scene of a condominium fire as neighbors struggled to keep a woman from going back inside for a pet. The standard three and one assignment was sent at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday December 14, 2011 sending companies from Sun City, El Mirage and Surprise to work.

Engine 122 was still one minute from the scene when they reported an obvious working fire in the six unit complex. Arriving on scene at 6:44 p.m. Engine 122 said they had one unit fully involved with fire extending into neighboring units. All persons were believed to be out of the homes. Battalion Chief 131 arrived at 6:46 p.m. and assumed command. He ordered a full first alarm response in less than sixty seconds. This brought one more engine from Sun City West and a ladder company from Surprise as well as several command officers. The mobile command post was called as was Rehab 1 both from Phoenix.

With three units well involved and the other three in immediate danger command ordered a second alarm at 7:08 p.m. The fire was declared under control at 7:38 p.m. Loss stopped was 8:13 p.m. Sun City Chief of Department Jim Haner was on scene during the incident.

The Phoenix Fire Department Regional Dispatch Center moved up engines from Phoenix, Glendale and Avondale to cover vacant firehouses in the northwest corner of the metro area.

Other departments working on scene were Peoria, Glendale, Sun City West, Phoenix and Avondale. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
