JAMESTOWN, NY - On October 24th, the Jamestown Fire Department was dispatched to 539 Crescent Street for a reported structure fire. Car 1 went on scene reporting a working structure fire with flames showing on the A/D side.
Firefighters on Engine 3 deployed (two) one and-three-quarter-inch lines to the second-floor to attack the fire while firefighters from Engine 4 connected to a hydrant at Crescent and Kipp Streets. Crews were able to knock down the bulk of the fire on the second-floor within about 15 minutes, according to a news release from the city fire department.
Crews from Ladder 1 completed primary and secondary searches of the first and second floors of the home. Crews from Engine 3, Ladder 1 and Engine 4 tried to find a way into the attic of the home, but were unable to do so, so firefighters made multiple holes to contain the spread of the fire.
Firefighters were evacuated from the home and attacked the rest of the fire from outside when fire spread between the original roof and the tin roof that had been laid on top of the original structure. Once fire between the roof panels was brought under control, crews returned to the inside of the house to extinguish the rest of the fire.
Two kittens were killed and one person was taken to UPMC Chautauqua to be treated for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
