Mastic, N.Y. — Firefighters from Mastic and neighboring departments responded to a house fire Thursday morning on the 170 block of Mastic Boulevard, where flames were quickly spreading through the rear of the home.

The Mastic Fire Department was activated at 10:17 a.m. on Oct. 17, 2024, after receiving reports of the fire. Chief Steven Januszkiewicz was the first to arrive on scene, finding the rear of the house fully involved in flames. Moments later, the first engine arrived, and firefighters rapidly stretched a hose line, launching an aggressive attack on the fire while working to cool a propane tank located behind the house, officials said.

Additional engine crews from Mastic and mutual aid departments, including Brookhaven, Manorville, Center Moriches, East Moriches, and Eastport, arrived shortly after to assist with extinguishing the blaze. Firefighters also conducted searches inside the home and confirmed that all occupants, along with their pets, had safely escaped.

Mastic Beach Fire Department stood by at Mastic headquarters to handle any additional calls during the incident. Shirley EMS and Mastic EMS were on scene to provide firefighter rehab and standby for any potential injuries.

The fire was brought under control by 10:55 a.m., but firefighters remained on scene for another hour to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and overhaul. In total, the alarm lasted about two hours.

The scene was turned over to investigators from the Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s Office and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and no further information has been released.
