Brookhaven, NY – On the evening of September 11, 2024, the Brookhaven Fire Department held a solemn ceremony to honor the lives lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Dozens of firefighters from the department gathered outside their headquarters to pay tribute to their fallen brothers and sisters, as well as civilians who perished in the attacks.
The ceremony began with prayers for those who lost their lives, led by members of the department. A key moment in the commemoration came when Lieutenant Brian Lamonica Jr. rang the department's fire bell in the 5-5-5-5 pattern, a traditional signal used by the FDNY to honor a line-of-duty death.
Chief Anthony Verni addressed the crowd, reflecting on the sacrifices made 23 years ago and the enduring legacy of those who served that day. He was joined by his assistant chiefs and members of the department’s Ladies Auxiliary in presenting wreaths. The ceremony also held special significance for the department as they honored one of their own, lost in the attacks.
In a poignant conclusion, Firefighter Patrick played the bagpipes, filling the evening air with the solemn notes of remembrance. Following the music, Chaplain Jim Vaz offered a closing benediction, blessing those in attendance and providing a final moment of reflection for all who gathered to honor the fallen.
