Road Collapse Causes Environmental Disaster in Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, NY - On Monday, August 19th, during a torrential rain downpour, the Stony Brook Fire Department responded to a call for a reported roadway collapse at Avalon Pond.
Emergency crews arrived and were faced with a road actively collapsing and being swept away from a large amount of rushing water. Subsequently, a home on the corner of Harbor Road and Main Street partially collapsed and was condemned. Luckily, no injuries were reported.
Avalon Pond was completely drained, and the water was pushed into other nearby local waterways. A local animal rescue group rescued several turtles and a family of ducks. Local officials, Town of Brookhaven officials, Suffolk County officials, and NY State resources are working together.
According to the National Weather Service, Stony Brook was hit the hardest with 9.55 inches of rain fall overnight. The last time this particular situation occurred was 110 years ago in 1914.
