A gas pump explosion at the City of Albany Department of General Services facility on August 4, 2026, critically injured Albany Fire Department Battalion Chief Wayne Brennan and DGS Supervisor Anthony Hughes, prompting a major fire, EMS and law-enforcement response.

The emergency was reported at approximately 3:12 p.m. after a temporary gas pump exploded and caught fire. Despite suffering severe burns, Brennan radioed for a box alarm, advised dispatchers that he and another person were down and requested advanced life support. Even while awaiting assistance, the 33-year Albany Fire Department veteran continued providing incoming companies with critical information and requested the department’s foam unit.

Multiple Albany fire companies, rescue units and Mohawk Ambulance Service crews responded as a column of black smoke rose from the facility. First-arriving firefighters immediately went to Brennan while other companies attacked the fire at the fuel pumps. Firefighter-paramedics simultaneously began treating Brennan and Hughes for their burn injuries.

As the seriousness of Brennan’s injuries became apparent, Rescue 2 requested a medical helicopter. Albany Medical Center also sent additional medical resources, including field physicians, to assist crews at the scene. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire in approximately 10 minutes while medical operations continued.

Hughes was transported by ambulance to Albany Medical Center and was later transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for specialized burn treatment. The 47-year-old, 20-year city employee suffered second- and third-degree burns over approximately 30% of his body and was reported in stable condition.

Brennan was transported by medical helicopter to the Westchester Medical Center Burn Unit, where he remained in critical condition. A 33-year veteran of the Albany Fire Department, Brennan continued directing portions of the response over the radio despite his own injuries, requesting resources and providing information until fellow firefighters reached him.

The explosion occurred at temporary fuel pumps being used while new pumps were being installed at the DGS facility. Investigators established a scene around the explosion site after fire and medical operations were brought under control. The Albany Police Department, New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the cause.

In the weeks following the explosion, firefighters, city employees and community members have rallied around both men and their families. The Albany Firefighters Cancer & Disability Foundation will hold a benefit for Brennan and Hughes from 2 to 6 p.m. on August 29 at Fidens Brewing Company, 897 Broadway in Albany, with proceeds supporting the two longtime public servants as they continue their recoveries.
