Paterson Fire Chief Brian McDermott retired from the PFD on August 1st. A large “Clap-Out” ceremony was held at Fire Headquarters on his last tour on July 28th. Over 100 attendees including fellow PFD members, members of neighboring departments, politicians, dignitaries, and many friends.
During his relatively short 5.5 year tenure as chief, McDermott received accolades for his many accomplishments including, but not limited to leading the department through the COVID-19 crisis which brought media attention from across the country. The upgrade of new equipment including electric cars and EV ambulances as well as a brand new high water rescue vehicle. Having free fire alarms installed in homes, and much more.
Mayor Andre Sayegh called McDermott “America’s Fire Chief”. Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. presented a frame with The Congressional Record honoring Chief McDermott. The ceremony ended with Chief McDermott giving an emotional farewell and wishing a bright and safe future to the PFD.
