Tractor-Trailer Fire Behind Glenmont Walmart

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

GLENMONT, NY - A tractor-trailer fire behind a Walmart was quickly moved away from the building and extinguished in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 25th.

The Elsmere Fire Department and Delmar-Bethlehem EMS were dispatched to the Glenmont Walmart at 311 Route 9W in Glenmont for a reported tractor-trailer fire close to the building around 2:30 A.M. Units were advised that the trailer was a refrigeration trailer full of frozen meat and produce products.

The truck was reportedly parked at the loading dock when the driver initially realized there was a fire and pulled the trailer away from the building and attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher.

“The driver did a great job,” said Chief Marc Futia of the Elsmere Fire Department. “He detached himself from the trailer and moved his truck away.”

He says the fire started as a brake fire and fire began to burn at the rear of the trailer.

“Once they ignited, there was a tire blowout on the driver's side of the trailer,” Futia said.

The fire then began to spread up the sides of the trailer in the rear. Two engines from Elsmere Fire arrived and pulled two hand lines to extinguish the fire. Crews were on scene for less than two hours.

There was no damage reported to the building due to the quick actions from the truck driver moving the trailer away from the building once the fire started.

There were no injuries reported on the scene.
