Sound Beach, N.Y. — July 1 — A reported structure fire on Vine Road in Rocky Point prompted the Sound Beach Fire Department, located at 152 Sound Beach Blvd., Sound Beach, NY 11789, to react on mutual assistance. When they arrived, firefighters divided into two groups, opening external walls close to propane cylinders where the fire was thought to have originated and searching for fire extension within the house.

While Miller Place firemen helped with searches and overhaul, Rocky Point crews put out the main fire. The Rapid Intervention Team was staffed by the Brookhaven National Laboratory Fire Department. According to preliminary investigations, the fire was started by a lightning strike. After coordinated mutual aid activities, all units were back in service in less than two hours.
