JERSEY CITY, NJ - Firefighters and Gong Club members assembled at Bayview Cemetery on July 24th to remember and honor those members of the F.D.J.C. who have performed the ultimate sacrifice.
Engineer James McCarthy, of Steamer Co. 3, was killed in the line of duty, on this date 152-years ago, when a burning downtown warehouse collapsed. He was the first career member to die in the Line-of-Duty.
The memorial was started by the late Ira Rubin, a city fire dispatcher, Fire Department historian and Life Member of the Gong Club. Since his death, the Gong Club has continued to support the memorial.
July 24th has been declared the Annual Day of Remembrance for the city's fallen firefighters.
Fire Department Chaplain, Father James Pagnotta, honored the 57 members that have given their life serving the city. Never Forget.
