Concord, NH - On July 13, 2024, city firefighters battled a house fire in the Penacook section of Concord on a hot and humid afternoon with temperatures in the 90’s. A 911 call came into the Concord Fire Compact dispatch center reporting smoke coming from a house on Elm Street at 1:32 p.m. Engine 5 and Battalion Chief Jeffrey Stone arrived to find heavy fire showing from a large cape with a barn attached.
A second-alarm was transmitted for tankers and a general alarm for all off duty firefighters to respond. This part of Elm Street is out of the hydrant district, so a tanker shuttle was established.
Firefighters fought heavy fire from the interior and exterior of the single-family house at 286 Elm Street. “I have to give credit to the first arriving companies, it was alot of fire and for this heat, they did a very aggressive, very hard attack on that fire.” said Fire Chief John Chisholm. “They came out and they were spent. I mean they gave it everything they had.”
Other firefighters rotated in to fully extinguish the fire. One firefighter was evaluated for heat exhaustion but did not need to be transported to the hospital. The fire was brought under control at 2:44 p.m. and crews remained on the scene for the afternoon extinguishing hot spots and overhauling the interior and exterior of the building.
