Downed Power Line Ignites Fire In Reading Home

Reading, PA - Early on the morning of July 16th, dispatchers from the Berks County DES dispatched Engine 9 to a home on Alsace Road to check on a possible wire down. Engine 9 arrived in the area and found a wire down with a small fire in some adjacent trees. After requesting the power company the engine was returned while the Chief awaiting their arrival. The utility company arrived 15 minutes later and both the workers and Chief Rehr returned to the rear of the home where the wire was to smoke pushing from the home. The box alarm was transmitted at 1:59 A.M. sending companies to 1611 Alsace Road. Firefighters woke the occupants and safely evacuated them while crews stretched a line into the home and found fire around the load center. After opening several wall cavities the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported. The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
