Members of the Hope Volunteer Fire Department's Station 38 were called to a reported grill fire on a house deck on May 26 while they were attending a planned training exercise at Swayze Mill Park.
According to officials, Engine 38-63 set up a water supply while Rescue Engine 38-62 arrived and deployed a hose line. Firefighters discovered the homeowner actively fighting the fire with a garden hose and portable fire extinguisher after conducting an investigation. By taking these steps, the flames were successfully kept from spreading past the terrace railing and seriously damaging the house.
Department leaders noted that the incident highlights the importance of having a properly rated fire extinguisher readily available and taking quick action when it can be done safely. Officials emphasized that life safety remains the top priority and residents should always ensure they have a safe escape route and immediately evacuate if conditions become dangerous.
Firefighters credited the homeowner’s efforts with helping limit the fire and protect the property until emergency crews arrived.
