The calls for 16-18 Phoenix Street in Springfield began coming into fire alarm just before six o'clock in the morning on Tuesday April 22, 2025. Crews were sent to the above address for a reported working structure fire and first in Engine 4 and Truck 4 arrived to find the Alpha side fully involved with fire gaining possession of the second floor. Crews used large caliber hand lines and Engine 4's deck gun to knock down the heavy fire from the exterior before moving inside to knock down all remaining fire on the first and second floors. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes. No serious injuries were reported as all residents of the duplex had managed to evacuate prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. The Arson and Bomb Squad determined the fire originated in the first floor living room of the right side unit due to improper disposal of smoking materials.
The fire was the second one to hit the property in eleven years. On February 10, 2014, the original two story frame duplex that sat on the site was gutted by an overnight fire that required the demolition of the building the next day due to the potential for collapse. That building was vacant at the time of the fire but the property was subsequently sold to a developer who built the light weight wood frame duplex that stood for barely a decade before the red devil made an encore performance.
