NEWARK, NJ - Several businesses were damaged in a fire that escalated to three alarms in the City of Newark during the early evening hours of April 22nd. The blaze, located at 574 Broadway, was initially reported at approximately 6:55 P.M., through several 911 calls. 

 

First arriving companies were met with heavy fire on the top floor and venting through the roof of the three-story wood-framed house, with fire extending to the exposures. The fire spread to both exposures that housed a liquor store and a three-story OMD at the corner of Delavan Ave. Heavy fire eventually took control of all the buildings, with companies evacuating the structures and going to an outside attack. Numerous outside hand lines, three ladder pipes and deck guns went into operation to knock down the heavy fire.

 

Fire officials say it was under control by 10:15 P.M. One firefighter suffered from minor burns on his chest and neck. The Red Cross says it is helping the displaced families with temporary housing, food and clothing. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Thirty-one adults and eight children have been displaced.
