Firefighters respond to basement fire in West Cape May

On April 4th West at 1422hrs West Cape May Station 57, Cape May Station 51 A-Shift and Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Department Engine 58 were dispatched to the 100 block of Broadway in West Cape May for a commercial fire alarm. West Cape May fire chief arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the basement of the residence. Engine 51 stretched a hand line to the basement and was quickly extinguished. A first alarm was transmitted which brought the US Coast Guard Engine 59 to assist with ventilation while Engine 57 & 58 crews checked for extension to the rest of the building and assisted with overhaul. Erma Fire Company Engine 62 provided coverage for the city. Crews operated on scene for approximately one hour before clearing. An electric scooter that was charging may have started the fire, but requires further investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshals Office.
