Townhouses Damaged and Destroyed in Fullerton Blaze

FULLERTON, PA - At approximately 11:00 A.M. on March 4th, heavy fire and thick black smoke were seen showing from the two-story townhouses located in the 400 block of Carolina Ave. As flames were coming out the front of 412, a more intense fire was spreading in the rear to the adjoining exposures. Meanwhile, the first due Whitehall Twp. Police were busy evacuating the occupants of the potentially affected townhouses.
When the four Whitehall companies were dispatched, they were augmented with Catasauqua, North Catasauqua for manpower, Greenwalds for RIT, and the Cetronia Ambulance Corps. The townhouses were built back when old laws allowed for a lack of fire walls in the attic area. Command requested a second-alarm, which brought in units from Laury's Station, Woodlawn, Coplay, Allentown and the Lehigh County air cascade.
The fire destroyed two of the townhouses and badly damaged the third, while the remaining two had a smoke odor, but were habitable. Three families composing of nine adults were affected by this blaze. No injuries were reported. The fire was under control in about 40 minutes, with the checking of hot spots taking place the rest of the day.
