On Saturday March 8th 2025 at approximately 1:00PM multiple fire departments were activated for multiple brush fires along Sunrise Highway. 90 departments combined from Suffolk County and Nassau County combated the flames. The fire spread due to dry conditions and strong winds. The fire consumed 600 acres of the Pine Barrens. A state of emergency was declared by Governor Kathy Hochol.
