Slatington- A fire on January 15 at 424 Second St. caused this 1 and 1/2 story Cape Cod dwelling to be considered as a total loss. A police patrol car radioed in this call around 00:30 hrs as a working fire and companies were dispatched. Heavy fire was coming from the second floor and also threatening a neighbor's home on exposure 2 requiring a second alarm to be transmitted. In coming companies also encountered some frozen hydrants and a third alarm was requested. The temperature was about 15 degrees with occasional strong wind gusts. As conditions worsened there was a partial roof collapse and the second floor collapsed onto the first floor eliminating the need for an interior attack. Four occupants were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. People of the two exposure homes were allowed to return to their homes. The fire was under control in about forty minutes.
