On January 21, 2025, at 5:46 PM, the city of Watervliet Fire Department along with mutual aid from the Green Island Fire Department, City of Cohoes Fire Department, and the Watervliet Arsenal Fire Department responded to 17 Eastview Drive Apartment 10 for a reported kitchen fire and the dispatcher advised the occupants they needed to evacuate the apartment. As units were responding to the scene the police department arrived on scene and notified the dispatcher that they had a working structure fire with heavy smoke showing from the front of the building.
The first arriving unit on scene immediately declared the signal thirty for a working structure fire as they had heavy smoke showing from main entrance of the building. Firefighters deployed an inch and three-quarter hand line down the walkway into the front of the structure and firefighters quickly put their mask on and made their way down into the basement apartment where they had a working kitchen fire that had extended into the cabinets. As the commanding officer conducted a quick walk around to the building, he had smoke pushing from the upper floors and began to make sure the building was evacuated. The pump operator on scene quickly established a water supply and command requested the second alarm to be transmitted bringing the city of Troy and city of Albany to the scene.
Firefighters inside of the apartment quickly conducted a primary search and discovered everybody was out of the main fire building. Firefighters in the basement apartment notified the firefighters from the Watervliet Arsenal Fire Department to check the upper floors above the main fire apartment for any extension. After further inspection firefighters only had a heavy smoke condition that had made its way into multiple apartments. Within a few minutes firefighters in the basement quickly had the fire completely knocked down and were beginning to overhaul.
Firefighters on scene had a significant smoke condition throughout the structure. Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul for an extended period of time after they completed their overhaul, firefighters began to pick up their large diameter hose and place it back into service. No injuries were reported, fourteen people were displaced by the fire. The fire was brought under control in less than 20 minutes. The fire was deemed accidental.
