A crash in Selkirk shut down a Thruway exit and closed a portion of River Road for almost 11 hours on a Sunday.

Several 911 calls were received for a car that had crashed into a pole as well as power lines down at approximately 6 a.m. on Sunday, January 15, on River Road at the entrance to Exit 22 of the NYS Thruway.

Bethlehem Police Officers arrived at the scene to find a 2005 white Lincoln that was unoccupied at the entrance/exit to the NYS Thruway, according to Sgt. Michael Whiteley of the Bethlehem Police Department.

Whiteley says a telephone pole and wires were down on the ground and blocking the exit ramp to the Thruway.

Arriving fire department units also came across a downed power line with an active fire condition at 1345 River Rd, down the road from the accident scene.

It was immediately requested that River Road was to be closed at Maple Avenue and at Beaver Dam Road while crews operated at both incidents. The Thruway exit was also shut down during the duration of the incident since it was blocked off from the downed pole and wires.

The Selkirk Fire Department arrived with Delmar-Bethlehem EMS and Albany County Paramedics.

An engine from Selkirk Fire stood by at the active fire condition and wire on the ground to ensure it wouldn’t spread while other crews blocked the road and assisted on the scene of the accident.

“Through investigation it was determined that the Lincoln, which is registered to a female out of Waterford, was traveling south on River Road when it left the travel lane to the right, striking the pole and two signs before coming to a rest,” Sgt. Whiteley said.

Bethlehem Police were assisted on the scene by the Albany County Sheriff’s Department with their K9.

“A search of the area was conducted in attempts to locate the driver without success,” Whiteley said. “The registered owner of the vehicle has been uncooperative in identifying the operator of her vehicle at the time of the crash.”

National Grid and NYS Department of Transportation assisted with road closures and replacing the pole and wires.

The road closures were lifted almost 11 hours later.

There were no injuries reported on the scene.
