A Carlstadt woman in her 80s and on oxygen was hospitalized for smoke inhalation from a fire that ravaged her Carlstadt home. Responding to a call at around 8:30pm of a resident having trouble breathing at 617 1st st. on the evening of January 14th, Carlstadt Police Officers Brian Monroe, Chelsea Marafelias and Anthony Bellina arrived and found the home was on fire,The officers rushed into the home and immediately got a first-floor resident to safety, Carlstadt Police Chief Thomas Cox said. The officers went back inside, found two more residents on the second floor and brought them out, as well, the chief said.

Heavy fire greeted first due companies with fire venting from the first floor going up the entire front of the home. Handlines quickly knocked down the heavy fire as firefighters entered the home to fight the blaze. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries battling the intense blaze.

Mutual aid at the scene and in coverage included companies from East Rutherford, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Lyndhurst, Moonachie, Rutherford, Wallington, South Hackensack and Wood-Ridge, The Bergen County chapter of the County Wide Emergency Response Team provided canteen services as temperatures had dipped into the 20s that night The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
