On one of the coldest nights of the season, a fire broke out in the long vacant Saint Mary’s High School at 103 Sherman Ave. on January 9th.

With high winds putting the wind chill in the single digits, the PFD responded to the report of fire shortly before 4:30 AM. Heavy fire was showing from several second floor windows threatening to extend to the third floor. Companies gained access through well secured entryways and advanced multiple lines to the fire floor and above. Ladder 3 accessed the roof. The flames were quickly knocked down and the building was checked for any extension. The fire was placed under control in one hour. The cause is under investigation.
