The Irvington Fire Department in Essex County was formed in 1894. Today, the fire department is a fully career fire department with approximately 111 uniformed firefighters working a 24/72 schedule. Irvington Township has 61,000 residents living in three-square-miles and is the third largest municipality in Essex County. The township is a densely populated urban center with numerous private and multiple dwellings, as well as large commercial and industrial buildings. The fire department also covers several miles of the Garden State Parkway which runs north and south through the township, as well as a portion of Interstate 78. The fire department currently responds from three fire stations with 3 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, and a cross-staffed special operations unit. Fire Department headquarters is located at 1 Civic Square. Engine 41 and Ladder 41 respond out of headquarters along with the Deputy Chief (shift commander). Fire Station #2 is located at 87 Coit St. Engine 42 and the Special operations unit respond out of the Coit St. firehouse. Fire Station 4 is located at 661 Grove St. is home to Engine 44 and Engine 42.
