The Westfield fire service is remembering retired Firefighter Anthony “Tony” Mazza, whose career was cut short by an injury sustained in the line of duty.

Mazza, a lifelong resident of Westfield, New Jersey, died August 8, 2026, at age 92. He joined the Westfield Fire Department on April 1, 1960, and served until June 1, 1970, when he was forced to retire at age 36 because of the line-of-duty injury.

Although his active career lasted approximately 10 years, Mazza maintained ties to the local fire service following his retirement. A published history of the Westfield Fire Department lists Anthony Mazza among the members of the Westfield Exempt Firemen's Association.

Mazza was a Westfield High School graduate and remained in his hometown, where he and his wife, Catherine, raised their three children. The couple was married for nearly 59 years.

Outside the fire service, Mazza was known for his ability to build and repair things and for sharing those skills with others. He also became known locally for elaborate holiday displays at his home that were recognized by local newspapers and became a tradition for visiting families.

Mazza was remembered by the fire department for his service and his continued connection to the Westfield community following his early retirement.
