Stone Harbor, N.J. — June 30 — Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company #1 commemorated the 13th anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire in remembrance of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots members who died defending the town of Yarnell, Arizona. Firefighter training, communications, and risk management have all continued to improve as a result of the tragedy, which is still among the deadliest wildland firefighting tragedies in US history.
The anniversary gave firefighters a chance to consider the commitment and devotion of the fallen crew while acknowledging the enduring lessons their sacrifice left for the fire service and upcoming generations of firefighters around the country.
