The Portland Fire Department reported the death of retired Fire Lieutenant Donald "Don" Whitney on June 26. Whitney was a longtime firefighter, historian, and supporter of maintaining the department's heritage.
Whitney joined the department in 1967, was promoted to lieutenant in 1974, and retired in 1987, according to officials. He continued to be actively associated with the Portland Fire Museum after he retired, acting as a curator and contributing to the department's historical preservation. In addition, he wrote a number of books, including The Loo, The Blackened Shield, and Portland's Greatest Conflagration, which he co-wrote with Michael Daicy. He also taught at Southern Maine Community College.
Department leaders said Whitney's commitment extended well beyond his firefighting career. Through his work as a historian, educator, and author, he ensured the stories, traditions, and sacrifices of Portland firefighters would be preserved for future generations. Officials extended their condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him.
