DOWNS: Four marina employees were treated for smoke inhalation as the result of a boat fire near Lake av. in Wildwood Crest, Aug. 22nd, according to WTXF-TV.

               

UPS: Bloomfield firefighters saved a kitten that was stuck in a sewage drain near a home on Walnut St., Aug. 25th, according to News 12.

               

DOWNS: Two people were injured after a boat exploded at the Raritan Marina in the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge, Aug.28th.  The explosion launched a man into the water.  He was pulled out by bystanders.  The victim was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, in New Brunswick, with burn injuries.  A second victim suffered injuries from shattered glass.  FDNY marine teams responded to assist local fire departments, according to WABC-TV.  

                

UPS: On an August morning, South Essex Fire Chief Joseph Alvarez met with firefighters at one of the regional department's firehouses.  This group included the first nine firefighters that were hired after the South Orange and Maplewood F.D.'s merged, two-years ago.  The “first nine” gave the chief a presentation helmet, and they thanked him for hiring them and being there to support them in their careers. 

                 

DOWNS: Three row house dwellings along Elmer St. in Trenton were consumed by fire, Aug. 24th, according to Mid-Jersey news.    

                 

UPS: In August, River Edge firefighters were called to assist the Bergen County Animal Control in the rescue of a turtle that was caught in fishing wire and hanging from a tree.  Firefighters took an animal control officer via boat to the turtle, and it was cut free.  The fishing hook was removed, the turtle examined, and released back into the river, according to a department Facebook post.  

                  

DOWNS: Officials at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange reported that a lightning strike had started a fire in a turtle recovery building, Aug. 28th.  Lightning caused damage to the roof and the turtles were relocated to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society in New York, according to News 12.

                  

UPS: In September, Bob Higgins was honored for his 76-years of volunteer service with the Princeton Fire Department.  Higgins first volunteered when he was 16-years-old, in 1943, according to News 12. He misses a few years while off fighting in World War II.  Higgins came home and kept serving the department and community.  

                  

DOWNS: Two pet cats perished in a fire on South Gateway in Toms River, Sept. 1st.  Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from a second-floor bedroom, according to Shore News Network.      

                  

UPS: New career firefighters appointed to the Ridgewood Fire Department are Tyler Biagi and Thomas Malone.  

                  

DOWNS: A 73-year-old man died as the result of a fire that involved a Walnut St. bungalow in Haddonfield, Sept. 16th, according to WPVI-TV.  

                  

UPS: In September, the Fair Lawn Fire Department dedicated its new training center, on Saddle River Rd., to the memory of Baltimore Fire Captain Dillon Rinaldo.  The captain was a former member of the local volunteer department for six-years before joining the Baltimore City F.D. Captain Rinaldo was one of two firefighters who died battling a fire that involved multiple row houses in Baltimore, last year.   

            

DOWNS: Three boats erupted into flames at the Brown's Point Marina on the Matawan Creek in Keyport, Sept. 9th.  A witness said one boat exploded and three boats were on fire, according to News 12.   

                   

UPS: Jason Zimmerman has been promoted to fire lieutenant in Jackson Fire District 2.  

                   

DOWNS: A resident of a West Ninth St. dwelling, in Bayonne, was listed in critical condition following an explosion and fire on Sept. 16th.  The victim was located outside of the house, with serious injuries, according to Deputy Chief Bill Bartos.  

                   

UPS: Newly appointed firefighters for Jackson Fire District 2 are Natalie Shirley and Jonathan Bosley.  

                   

DOWNS: On the morning of Sept. 10th, the East Rutherford Fire Department responded to Route 3 for a serious MVA run.  While first responders were operating, a second MVA occurred when a vehicle struck the back of an EMS unit which then struck an East Rutherford chief' s vehicle.  First responders were not injured, but there were injuries sustained by occupants of the other vehicles.    

                   

UPS: The West Orange Fire Department has been awarded $74,490 in Assistant s to Firefighters Grant (AFG) funds that will be used for personnel training in specific subject areas relevant to fires and EMS topics, according to the West Orange Patch.

                   

DOWNS: A small single engine plane crashed into the area past Main Street in Sussex Borough, Aug. 27th.  According to the NJSP, the pilot was taken to a local hospital to for treatment.  

                   

UPS: Newly hired firefighters in Carteret are Amr Abedelnabi, Jason Chapman, Caleb Delossantos and Lester Castillo.  

                   

DOWNS: Two people were killed in a 3-alarm fire that involved several dwellings on North Seventh St. in Paterson on the morning of Sept. 20th.               

                   

UPS: In September, Robert Duncan was promoted to fire chief in Montclair.        

                   

DOWNS: Montville fire units were dispatched to an electrical wire down with a brush fire on Oak La., Sept. 15th, in the Lake Village section. When firefighters arrived, they discovered fire involving a dwelling, in the basement and the first floor. Mutual aid units were called in to battle the blaze, according to Tap into Montville.   

                   

UPS: Eric Griggs has been promoted to fire captain in Hamilton Township.  

                   

DOWNS: A fire in a Basking Ridge condo, off of Arbor Circle, resulted in the death of a pet dog.  Multiple cats were rescued, according to the Basking Ridge Patch.    

                   

UPS: The Bergen County Fire Prevention and Protection Association named Alan Silverman the Fire Official and Fire Subcode Official of the Year, for 2024.   

                   

DOWNS: A 3-alarm fire on East Jersey St. in Elizabeth, September 1st, displaced two families and damaged a doctor's office. One pet cat was rescued, according to News 12.             

                    

UPS: A truckload of fire fighting equipment from New Jersey was recently delivered to the small Oklahoma town of Burns Flat.  The Somerdale Fire Department became the collection point for surplus gear and equipment no longer being used in our area, according to News 12.  Many small towns in Oklahoma are in much need of this equipment.  

                    

DOWNS: A 3-alarm fire displaced four families that occupied two homes on Glenwood av in East Orange, Sept. 7th, according to News 12.
